SON OF THE GUN Comic Book Review: A Pair Of Guns, A Crown Of Thorns

Combining the story of Sophocles’ Oedipus and the Biblical Christ within a cartel crime milieu, SON OF THE GUN by Alejandro Jodorowsky and Georges Bess is a comic that fits snugly into the oeuvre of both men. Details of its publication history are spotty—it’s considered “lesser” Jodorowsky and Bess (for reasons that will forever elude me) never earned the same name recognition that some of Jodo’s other collaborator’s did—but it ran for four albums from 1995 to 1999, and it was originally published in France under the name JUAN SOLO (the name of its lead character). It was originally reprinted in two softcover collections in the long, long ago of 2004 (and it looks like 4 hardcover collections back in 2001), back when Humanoids had teamed up with DC to publish their stuff.

Beginning in media res—as stories as mired in the classics as this are wont to do—Juan Solo narrates the story of his life, literally from the cross. He’s been hoisted onto a cross, given a crown of thorns, and wears only a loin cloth. The villagers fight him at every turn, this “Christ of Tlacahuepan,” begging him not to do it, God doesn’t require such a sacrifice. But Solo believes he does; the life Juan has lead has been so bad, the sins he’s committed so grievous, that martyring himself is the only way to sate the Old Testament God—blood demands blood, and Juan Solo has taken his share of blood.

The plan works and god grants the prayers of the townspeople—now: this is interesting in the way it contrasts with the other Jodorowsky/Bess collaboration that I’ve written about, where Buddhist (a non-theistic and self-fulfilling praxis) thought wins out over the Judeo-Christian conception of reality. So Solo, in martyring himself, fulfills his role as savior/Christ. But as he tells his story, we’re shown a man who doesn’t embody Jesus at all. His life appears more similar to Oedipus, which of course means that he’s raised by an adoptive family (in this case a boil-ridden cross-dressing dwarf who names Juan and gives him a gun to suckle on—“You are the son of the gun,” he says. (Solo (because he’s always been alone) is a self-selected last name that Juan gives when he joins a crew of hired killers) and Juan eventually comes to bed his mother and kill his father.
